1958年出生于大分县左伯市，因读了岛田的《奇想、天动》而受感动，去信给岛田庄司并透露了要成为作家的志愿，1991年终获得岛田庄司的推荐发表了她的首部长篇推理小说《机关木偶笑五次》，其后再相继发表主角侦探与首部作品相同的一尺屋遥系列如1992年的《蛇遣座的杀人》及1996年的《恶魔的水槽密室》等。由于她的首部作品风格与横沟正史颇为相似，所以也曾有"女流横沟"之称。
