彝海位于冕宁县城以北40公里羊坪山上，面积1平方公里，规划保护面积30平方公里，距国道108线7公里，建有专用公路。
1935年5月22日，中国工农经军先遣部队刘伯承司令、聂荣臻政委与彝族首领小约达（小叶丹）在彝海边想见，以水代酒，歃血明誓结为兄弟，使大队顺利通过百里彝区。1980年7月，四川省人民政府公布彝海结盟处为四川省文物保护单位，在湖边竖立了大理石文物标志。1995年，又正式列为省级风景名胜区。
彝海属高山淡水湖泊，山水林木特别明亮清新，登高俯瞰，海子酷似一颗镶嵌在群山中熠熠闪光的蓝宝石，晶莹剔透。海子四周古木参天，芳草盖地，杜鹃花、丁香花、山茶花争奇斗艳。湖中成群结队的野鸭飞扑鸣叫，凫游戏水。信步海边，犹如融进水墨画的笔峰墨迹之中，令人遐思万千，心旷神怡。彝海设有文物保护管理处，山顶建有了望台，湖中备有游船，湖畔有接待室、亭子、卫生间等设施，并划有野饮区。
