泥沙被坡面水流冲刷，一般在坡麓堆积下来，称为坡积物，坡积物的分布有两种情况；第一种，当坡面的倾斜坡度较大时，地表径流沿斜坡向下流动时给了泥沙一个起始的冲击力，使它脱离不稳定的静止状态，开始滚动，重量越大，滚动越远，泥沙粒径变化从坡顶到坡脚愈来愈粗。第二种，坡面的倾斜坡度比较小，水流作为介质，挟带坡面泥沙向下流动，颗粒越细带得越远。坡积物的物质来源是附近的山坡，由于搬运距离比较短，其碎屑颗粒的磨圆度很差，分选性也不太好。
