白蚁有1700个不同的种类，同蚂蚁一样是群居的社会性昆虫。它们住在巨大的巢穴里，那是一种由沙子、动物粪便与睡液混合后粘固而成的巢穴。巢穴的形状取决于建造它的白蚁的种类。穴内向外的通道由白蚁监管打开或关闭，以控制巢内的温度。
蚁群中最重要的成员是蚁王与蚁后，它们都长有翅膀。蚁后的身体由于怀着卵而膨胀得很大。但一旦蚁后与使卵授精的蚁王从另外一个白蚁群飞过来以后，它们的翅膀就都脱落了。
白蚁的巢穴能达到6米高，而且惊人的牢固。若人们想把它们从原建筑处移开，有时不得不动用炸药。
蚁后住在蚁巢中专门的一个房间里，除了产卵外什么都不做。工蚁负责给它喂食和清洁，兵蚁负责保卫它，兵蚁有一张大嘴，能够咬伤敌人。
由澳大利亚北部的罗盘白蚁建造的楔状巢穴，高达3.5米。其宽大平坦的两面分别对着东面和西面，这或许是控制巢内温度的一种方法。平坦的面可以吸收早晚太阳的温热，而东面朝向则使它不会吸进中午太阳的毒热。
