    　　地面起伏形态的一种数字表达。一般以规则排列的地面格网内平均高程的数字阵列表示。其原始数据可从地形图上获取，或从航空、航天像片建立的立体模型上读出，亦可从实地量测。这些数据输入电子计算机，经过滤波、内插和坐标变换等项处理，最后按一定格式贮存于磁带或磁盘中。
　　
　　数字地形模型的基本概念，是由美国人C.L.米勒于20世纪50年代提出的。首先用于公路设计，70年代，这一技术有了进一步发展，并得到广泛应用。用于军事测绘，能自动描绘等?呦吆徒邢衿⒎志勒侵谱髡溆跋竦赝嫉囊恢滞揪叮挥糜诘嫉频嫉牡匦纹ヅ湎低常煽刂?导弹沿预定航线飞行，提高命中目标的精度；用于炮位侦察雷达,能快速确定敌炮兵发射阵地位置,提高雷达反应速度。由于数字地形模型的作用日益明显，一些国家正研制自动获取原始数据的设备和多功能的数字处理系统，并开始建立地区性数字地形模型数据库。
