中国战国后期，秦国为加速向中原推进，在挫败齐国、击破楚国之后，兵锋直指另一劲敌赵国。周赧王四十六年(公元前 269)秦昭王以赵不履行交换城邑的协议为由，派中更胡阳率军攻赵要地阏与(今山西和顺)。赵惠文王命赵奢领兵往救。赵奢见秦军势盛，为隐蔽作战意图，率部出邯郸(今属河北)30里，即坚壁不进。时秦军一部进屯武安（今河北武安西南）西面,击鼓呐喊,耀武扬威，以钳制赵军。赵奢不为秦军声威所动，严厉制止驰援武安的主张，并增设营垒，造成赵军怯弱、唯保邯郸的假象,终使秦军轻敌麻痹。赵奢停留28天后,乘秦军不备，偃旗息鼓，率军疾进，两天一夜赶到距阏与城50里处筑垒列阵。秦军久攻阏与不克,突闻赵援兵至,仓促全力迎击。赵奢采纳军士许历建议，严阵以待，并派万人抢先占领北山高地。秦军攻山不下，赵奢挥兵反击，大败秦军，遂解阏与之围。
