苛化反应就是石灰与碳酸盐离子的反应: ca(oh) 2(固)+co3 2- → caco3(固)+2oh-
它有很广泛的应用，如用天然碱制烧碱(naoh)普遍采用的苛化法就是苛化反应实际应用的例子。
将天然碱液与过量不小于2％的石灰进行苛化反应，使碳酸钠转化为氢氧化钠，形成液体烧碱：
na2co3＋ca(oh)2=2naoh＋caco3↓
所得液碱经澄清、过滤、蒸发浓缩、冷析除盐和熔融等工序，可以制成含naoh95％以上的固体烧碱。
