   由植物遗体转变而成的层状固体可燃矿产。含煤岩系的重要组成部分,位于顶、底板岩石之间。煤层的厚度、层数、煤质和埋藏深度等是确定煤田经济价值及煤矿建设的重要依据。煤层可分为不含夹石层和含夹石层两类。夹石又称夹矸。夹石不仅使煤的灰分含量增高,也给开采带来一定困难。煤层顶、底板岩石之间的垂直距离称煤层厚度。煤层厚度可分为:①煤层总厚度。指包括夹石层在内的煤层全部厚度。②煤层纯厚度。指所有煤分层厚度的总和 。③ 煤层可采厚度。指在当前经济技术条件下适于开采的煤层厚度。煤层沿走向和倾向通常呈层状、似层状展布或分叉、复合、尖灭,有的呈透镜状、豆荚状、鸡窝状和串珠状。
