建宁闽江源自然保护区位于建宁县境内东南部，东北部与泰宁交界，总面积13022公顷，千里闽江正源发源于保护区内严峰山西南麓。区内金饶山海拨1858米，是三明第一个高峰，地层古老，又是建宁椴、建宁金腰的模式标本采集地。该区是武夷山脉中亚热带森林生态系统保护区的重要组成部分，是珍稀野生动植物的良好栖息地，有国家重点保护植物36种，国家级保护动物17种。建立闽江源省级自然保护区，对于闽江水源涵养以及生物多样性的保护都具有重要义。 建宁闽江源于9月4日通过省林业厅、省环保局组织的省级自然保护区评审。
