出口替代品依据出口替代外贸模式替代传统初级产品出口的不断升级的加工工业制成品。出口替代作为一种外向型战略，不仅以扩大出口带动工业和国民经济的发展，而且以本国工业制成品出口来替代初级产品出口。被替代的主要是传统的资源性初级产品，劳动密集型的简单加工产品。作为替代的产品主要是资本密集型和技术、智能密集型产品，以及一部分利用新技术、新材料对传统初级产品进行深加工的劳动密集型产品，出口替代品是出口层次不断优化的产物。一般来讲，出口替代品需求弹性大、卖价较高、市场广阔。大量出口有利于扩大出口，多创汇，从而有利于实现进口替代战略所期望的目标。但出口替代品的生产和出口，需要国内工业部门有较高的技术水平和经营管理经验，有政府的一套鼓励出口的政策措施，与国际市场有较密切的联系，产品对国际市场的依赖程度高。
