4-hydroxy-quinolones and indandione were respectively dissolved in methanol in thepresence of potassium hydroxide as the base at room temperature to give the oxidative intermediates, followed by the hydrolysis under heating condition in the mixture of tetrahydrofuran and hydrochloric acid to afford the corresponding vicinal triketones as the desired products.
