苏联将西伯利亚气田的天然气输往西欧的大型、长距离输气管道。管道始点为西伯利亚的乌连戈伊，途经喀山、莫斯科，终点位于苏联西部边境城市乌日哥罗德，全长4451公里，管径为1420毫米(穿越河流为1220毫米)。这条管道有40座压气站、2座天然气冷却站,还有计量站、线路截断阀室、居民供气支线和清管器收发装置等。管道线路穿越河流814条（其中大河20条），通过118公里永冻土、200.8公里沼泽地、758.4公里水淹地，工程十分艰巨。管道建成后，苏联每年可向奥地利、联邦德国、法国、意大利等西欧国家出口320亿立方米天然气。
管道采用丙烷冷却天然气的低温输送工艺，以保证永冻土地带的管段不致因向土壤散热而使永冻土解冻。这条管道的管子采用直缝电焊管，其极限强度为6000千克力/厘米2,屈服强度为4700千克力/厘米2。管道防腐除采用粘胶带为外包绝缘层外，还采用了阴极保护系统。管道采用多信道无线电通信。此外，还设有中央调度遥控系统，对管道、压气站等进行自动化集中管理。
