性质: 有邻(o-)、间(m-)、对(p-)三种异构体,均为无色液体,存在于炒熟的胡桃中。三种混合,有近似苦杏仁气味。o-甲基苯甲醛沸点197℃,相对密度1.0386,折射率1.549。m-甲基苯甲醛沸点199℃,相对密度1.019,折射率1.5407。p-甲基苯甲醛沸点204℃,相对密度1.015,折射率1.5469。三种均微溶于水,溶于乙醇、乙醚;可氧化成酸;可以发生安息香缩合、克莱森缩合(Claisen condensation),交叉羟醛缩合等反应,可由相应的二甲苯部分氧化(化学法或电解氧化法)制备。是重要的有机合成中间体,用于香料,三苯甲烷染料等的合成。
