形态特征：落叶灌木或乔木。树冠圆形或伞形，小枝紫褐色有白粉。单叶互生，宽卵圆形至肾脏形，叶柄细长，紫红色。圆锥花序顶生，花单性与两性共存而同株，花瓣黄色，不孕花有紫红色羽毛状花柄宿存。核果小，肾形。
生态习性：喜光、耐半荫，耐寒、耐旱、耐贫瘠、耐盐碱土，不耐水湿，在深厚肥沃偏酸性的沙壤土上生长良好，根系发达。
繁栽要点：用播种、扦插繁殖。种子成熟后要及时采种，宜在播种床上作条播或撒播，播种前种子要经过70天~90天沙藏处理，或用80摄氏度温水浸种催芽。种植地应选高燥不积水、温差较大的地方。扦插主要用根插，也可分株繁殖。
