大正十一式轻机枪被叫“歪把子”的原因是因为枪托弧形像鹅脖子一样折向一边。
“歪把子”机枪是日本人在1922年研制的，子弹与38式步枪通用，因其枪托弧形折向一边故称"歪把子"机枪。
十一年式轻机枪使用独特的“弹斗”供弹。“弹斗”可以容纳6个38式步枪使用的5发弹夹。与步兵统一使用相同的弹夹应该是很方便,理论上只要有副射手不断向弹斗中装填5发的弹夹，就可以象重机枪一样持续发射。不过，“弹斗”容易累积尘土影响操作,而且存在枪管过热的问题,又不能换枪管， 射击必须中断。加上设计者南部骐次郎少校从3式机枪开始，所有设计的机枪（包括十一年式）都仿效法国“哈奇开斯”(hotchkiss) 用地深引力方式供应润滑油润滑子弹。润滑油加尘土的确不是一个好的“配搭”，因此，十一年式的故障率高。后来被用传统30发弹夹的96式轻机枪取代。
大正十一式轻机枪使用38式步枪使用的5发弹夹6.5毫米口径枪弹，后坐力不会很大。
