He devoted his life to write Xu Liujing that was composed of Xu Si, Xu Shu, Li Lun, Yue Lun, Yi Zan and Yuan Jing, but there only are Zhong Shuo and Yuan Jing now and others have lost.
著述有《太平十二策》、《中说》、《续六经》等多种,《续六经》包括《续诗》、《续书》、《礼论》、《乐论》、《易赞》、《元经》六种,今仅存《中说》与《元经》两种,其他皆佚,但从《中说》中可观其梗概。

作者认为，史载王通门人可分为正式入门弟子、受教于王通但未正式入门也可以弟子视者及曾偶或就教或请益于王通者三类；《中说》非阮逸作，《中说》自有其失，但其中也有不少论者以为其误而实未必误之处；杜淹《文中子世家》为文不富，时有阙失，但若因此又不周而疑及王遍及《中说》，斯亦过矣。
