| 牙形石 conodonts 具有各种各样尖齿或锯齿状物的古代动物遗体，微体古生物学的重要研究内容之一。牙形石个体很小，从不足0.1毫米到约4毫米。未经变质的牙形石一般呈琥珀光泽，浅褐黄、灰白色，透明或不透明。其主要化学成分是磷酸钙，由磷灰石类矿物呈纤维状或薄片状排列而成。牙形石的生物分类位置至今仍未确定。牙形石分布甚广，但仅限于海相沉积物。从寒武纪开始出现，以后几经盛衰，绝灭于三叠纪。牙形石演化十分迅速，为标准化石，用于地层的划分和对比，尤其是井下地层的划分对比起着重要的作用。 |
