当胚胎第5~6孕周时,覆盖胚胎表面的绒毛上皮分为内层与外层,外层为合体滋养层;内层为细胞滋养层,前者为连续,长形细胞组成,细胞界限不清,细胞核扁平而深染。后者细胞正方形,界限清楚,胞浆透明。合体滋养细胞的功能主要是可合成各种激素和酶。这些激素和酶在参与妊娠期母体变化中起重要作用。
