昼夜是白天和黑夜的合称。昼夜交替是地球在太阳光的照射下，因自转运动而形成的一种自然现象。
我们生活的地球是以半个球面向着太阳，另外半个球面背向太阳，待在向着太阳的半个球面的人就是生活在白天，而待在背向太阳的半个球面上的人则生活在黑夜。由于地球在不停地自转着，造成地球上每一个地方都有白天和黑夜的交替。
例如，咱们生活在中国广州，当广州正对着太阳时，广州市民就处在中午的时刻。由于地球自西向东旋转，人们不能察觉地球的旋转，却看到太阳慢慢地自东向西偏移。经过6个小时，地球向东转了90°，广州市民便处在日落西山的傍晚时分。地球继续旋转，广州转到背向太阳的位置时，广州市就到了子夜0时。再经过6个小时，地球又转过了90°，广州市便是晨曦初露，白天就要到来。随后，广州又回到向着太阳的位置上时，广州市民也回到了中午从而完成了一次昼夜的交替。
