焦深指物体的点在镜头后沿成像器轴线所测定能够获得较清晰成像的距离。
简单的说：镜头的像平面两边的清晰范围称为焦深。
焦深从像平面前开始，到达像平面时汇聚的光锥形成最小程度的弥散圈，然后在像平面背后发散光锥延伸到焦深开始时同样的直径上时而消失，它的深度很小只为一英寸的百分之几而已。因此焦深所提供的调焦宽容度很小。
与景深相互共轭的眼视网膜像位间的距离称为焦深。
