古印度佛教思想家。据西藏资料记载,他是南印度梭罗修多罗国德铠王的儿子,原名寂铠,出家后改为寂天。他曾在东印度第五代师子王处服务12年,勤奋好学,博通内外各派学说。后到那烂陀寺出家,拜胜天为师。"内勤修学,外出放逸"。初不受大家欢迎,被称为"三行者"(只会吃、睡、大小便)。后来当众诵出《入菩提行》一千颂,才引起人们的重视。不久,又离开那烂陀寺,回到南印度。他是晚期大乘龙树一派空宗的思想家,分别真俗二谛,反对弥勒、无著一派的有宗,对瑜伽行派的理论加以驳斥,同时也反对佛教的与非佛教的其他几个派别的论点。在《入菩提行》中,宣讲六度(六波罗蜜多),注重修持。他对佛学的贡献表现在学风的转变上。其特点,一是"守约",即由博而约;二是"见行相应",即不偏于"见"(理论和观点),也不偏于"行"(实践)。这对大乘学说的发展有一定影响。他的学说在11世纪由阿底峡传入西藏后,被格鲁派创始人宗喀巴大加宣扬,对藏传佛教颇有影响。
