Ostracda

   甲壳动物亚门的一纲。为具双甲壳的水生无脊椎动物  。身体很小,体长一般不超过0.5毫米,最大达23毫米。头胸甲由两瓣介壳构成,整个身体完全包被在壳瓣内,壳瓣主要为钙镁质或几丁质,两性异形。左、右两壳瓣等大或不等大,大壳常沿边缘包覆小壳。壳体侧视卵形、肾形、长方形、三角形等;壳面光滑,或网纹、具沟、隆起、脊、瘤、眼结节、卵育囊等;有些种类前端或前腹部具喙及凹痕。铰合构造无齿,或具各类型齿。身体分节不明显,末部向腹面弯曲,末端具尾叉。形状随种而异。附肢最多不超过7对。多数无鳃,少数具片状鳃。肛门多数开于尾叉背面。多数具单眼。雌雄异体。多数种类雌性的卵产出后藏于身体背面两壳之间,有的直接散布在水中。
   介形类在海洋中从沿岸到4000米深海底都有发现。在淡水的河川、湖泊以及高山湖泊都有分布。多数种为底栖  ,少数营浮游生活,介形类可作为一些经济鱼类一定时期的主要食料。介形类有许多化石种类,其个体甚小,容易在钻井岩芯中找到,在寻找矿产资源(石油、煤、地下水等)时  ,是确定地层时代和沉积环境的重要和微体化石之一。对于指示海底石油资源的勘探和地质年代的确定,以及海洋古生态的研究都具有重要意义。
   根据最近分类,将该纲分为3个亚纲。共5目54科约5600多种。
