美国海军陆战队第1师 1942年7月31日，陆战1师1.6万人搭乘特纳海军少将指挥的南太平洋登陆舰队，从斐济岛出发，向瓜达尔卡纳尔岛驶去。 瓜岛争夺战是太平洋战争中一场空前残酷而激烈的大搏杀。此役美日海军各损失航空母舰2艘，参战的6万美陆军和海军陆战队官兵有1600人阵亡，4200人受伤。岛上的3.6万日军，阵亡及失踪1.4万人，病死9000人，被俘1000人。当然，这些数字不包括双方在支援瓜岛作战中损失惨重的海军和空军伤亡人数。陆战第1师还参加了1945年3月的冲绳岛战役。
