【主要简介】
p226和p228都只有9mm口径，不能象p220那样更换不同口径的枪管。为了让采用双排弹匣的sig-sauer系列手枪有多种不同的口径选择以满足市场的需要，sig公司在1990年开始研制p229手枪，并在1992年投放市场。在这个系列里，p229是第一支不在德国sauer公司生产的手枪。
p229与p228的尺寸相同，但可以通过更换枪管发射三种手枪弹，.40s&w弹，9mm手枪弹和sig公司专门研制的.357sig手枪弹。发射.40s&w弹可以讲是潮流所趋，特别是在执法部门当中，已经大量使用发射.40s&w弹的手枪了。而.357sig则是新开发的一种警用手枪弹。
.357sig弹采用.40s&w的弹壳和.357口径的弹头，由于弹头较小，因此弹壳是瓶颈形的，这样弹壳内就有更多的发射药，这使.357sig同时兼有.357马格南左轮手枪弹的威力和.40自动手枪弹的小尺寸、大容量。在glock和usp紧凑型都推出了发射.357sig弹的型号后，.357sig弹算是有了sig公司以外的支持者。
