阴茎与会阴间的皮肤囊袋，内藏睾丸、附睾和精索下部。阴囊外面正中线上有阴囊缝，其内部正中由筋膜形成的阴囊纵隔，将其分成左、右两腔，分别容纳两侧睾丸与附睾。阴囊皮肤薄弱、柔软，覆以少量阴毛，有显著色素沉着。阴囊皮下浅筋膜缺乏脂肪，但含有平滑肌纤维，由于平滑肌的收缩与舒张，阴囊的大小可发生很大的改变，从而可调节其内部的温度，以利于精子的繁殖发育。
