地生或腐生草本，地下通常有长或短的根状茎，稀具块茎，不具假鳞茎。叶基生或茎生；叶片通常扁平，罕有近圆筒型，少数无叶（腐生种类）。花两侧对称，罕有近辐射对称；唇瓣基部通常不具长距；花药以狭窄基部或花丝连接于蕊柱，常枯萎或脱落；花粉团通常2个，罕有4个，为均匀的粒粉质或由可分的小团块组成，具花粉团柄和黏盘或否，若有花粉团柄则从花药顶端伸出；蕊喙长或短，前者常直立并分裂。
全世界共约80属，热带至温带分布。我国有8个亚族，29属。云南产6个亚族，18属。
