发生法(genetie method)有两种含义:一是追溯心理现象本源或发展过程，从而全面地深入地了解这种心理现象;二是研究基因对某种功能或结构所造成的影响。通常发生法用于研究遗传现象，研究遗传对人类行为及心理活动的影响。包括以下几种方法:(l)选择交配法。即让某些具有特殊行为的个体互相交配，然后在其下一代中寻找带有这种行为者，再进行交配。如此进行几代后，就能明了某种行为是由遗传所造成。(2)家世比较法。即比较两族同类动物不同世系的行为。先将比较的动物进行选择性交配，然后进行观察研究。若两族的家谱越纯，他们之间的行为差异归为遗传的可能性越大。(3)单位特征法。即单独一对基因在行为上所显现的影响。若具有某一特征的动物进行交配后，在下一代中能出现这种特征，并符合孟德尔比例，说明此种行为特征是受某种基因所控制，受遗传影响。发展心理学领域里通常是指第一种意义而言。在几年或几十年的时间内，对儿童心理某一方面的发展，进行系统连续的追踪研究，以便发现这一心理现象的发生年龄及发展规律。 (白学军撰申继亮审)
