| 麦哲伦（1480～1521） Magellan，Ferdinand 葡萄牙航海家。生于葡萄牙波尔图，卒于菲律宾群岛马克坦岛。早年参加葡萄牙远征队，曾到过印度马拉巴尔海岸、马六甲海峡和马鲁古群岛等地。后移民西班牙。在西班牙国王支持下，进行向西环球航行。1519 年9月20日率船队从西班牙桑卢卡尔港启航，向西南到巴西海岸，再南驶，经南美大陆和火地岛之间的海峡（后名为麦哲伦海峡），入当时称为南海的太平洋，在横渡南海的航行中船队未遇到一次暴风雨和巨浪 ， 麦哲伦和船员称之为太平洋， 此名沿用至今。1521年3月16日到菲律宾群岛，4月27日在与马克坦岛土著人的冲突中被杀。1522年9月8日船队中的维多利亚号回到出发地。这次航行是人类历史上第一次环球航行，以实践证明了大地球形说的正确。
