【植物形态】
狼尾草 多年生草本。须根较粗而硬。秆丛生，直立，高30～100厘米，花序以下常密生柔毛。叶精光滑，扁压，具脊；叶舌短小；叶片线形，长15～50厘米，宽2～6毫米，顶端长渐尖，通常内卷。穗状圆锥花序，长5～20厘米，主轴硬，密生柔毛；总梗长2～3毫米，密生柔毛；刚毛长1～2.5厘米，具向上微小糙刺，成熟后通常呈黑紫色，小穗通常单生，长6～8毫米；第1颖微小，卵形，脉不明显；第2颖具3～5脉，长为小穗的1/2～2/3；第1外稃草质，具7～11脉，与小穗等长，边缘常包卷谷粒；谷粒软骨质，披针形，与小穗等长；花药顶端无毛。颗果扁平长圆形，长约3.5毫米。花、果期秋、冬季。 多生长田岸、道旁或山坡。广布我国南北各地。 本植物的根及根茎(狼尾草根)亦供药用，另详专条。
