由于超导磁体环流在零电阻下无能耗运行,所以超导线圈中可持久地储存电磁能,且在短路情况下运行,称超导储能。它的优点在于:⑴一次储能可长期无损耗地保存,又可瞬时放出;⑵储存能量高,现已可达107J/m3以上;⑶用低压电源励磁即可;⑷装置体积小;⑸节省了常规所需的送变电设备和减少送变电损耗。
