北回归线标志碑位于嘉义市西南3.3公里，纵贯公路旁的北回归线标志，建于1908年（清光绪三十四年），高约20米，为一塔型石碑建筑。碑顶有3个东西、南北和水平相交叉的圆球，石碑四面浮雕“北回归线标志”6个大金字，标志碑石台上刻有北纬23°27′4.51″，东经120°24′46．50″等字样。势、温两带以北回归线为界，由此以南为热带。北回归线横过台湾的澎湖、嘉义、南投、花莲四县，台湾岛上东、西各立碑志，东标志碑建在花莲县的瑞穗车站，西标志碑就是嘉义这一座.
