拜占庭的建筑
拜占庭原是古希腊与罗马的殖民城市。其建筑按国家发展可分为三个阶段：
一、前期：即兴盛时期（4-6世纪），主要是按古罗马城的样子来建设君士坦丁堡。在6世纪出现了规模宏大的以一个穹隆为中心圣索菲亚大教堂。
二、中期：（7-12世纪），由于外敌相继入侵，国土缩小，建筑减少，规模也大不如前。其特点是占地少而向高发展，中央大穹隆没有了，改为几个小穹隆群，并着重于装饰，如威尼斯的圣马可教堂。
三、后期：（13-15世纪），十字军的数次东征使拜年占庭帝国大受损失。这时建筑既不多，也没有什么新创造，后来在土耳其入主后大多破损无存。
