性质：又称局部网、本地网等。一种在有限地理区域(一般在几公里以内，如办公楼、校园等)内工作，供联机、实时通信用的、具有较高数据传输速率的双向通信网络。局域网不仅使计算机用户间可以相互通信，而且可以共享网内丰富的软硬件资源。局部网一般由一个与各分支结点相连的，采用环形、星形、总线等拓扑结构电缆网络组成，每个结点都相当于一个配有网络接口设备的用户工作站。典型的局域网综合了各种数字交换设备，采用分布式结构，有极大的容量，可使大量分散用户灵活、高效地访问网内多种计算机。
