货厢为罐式容器，用于装运各种液体货物的专用汽车。通常把装运油品的液罐汽车称为油罐汽车。作为货厢的罐式容器通常是长柱形的密封罐，罐的横截面有圆形、椭圆形及近似矩形三种。圆形截面罐强度高，但重心较高，通常用于运输高压液体（如液态氧和液态二氧化碳等）。椭圆形截面罐重心较低，汽车行驶稳定，采用较多。矩形截面罐的重心低，但结构强度较差，用材较多，应用很少。罐式容器内设有隔板、防波挡板或分设独立的单室，以减少汽车行驶时罐内液体波动。运输易燃、有毒或腐蚀性强的溶液，液罐汽车应采取相应的安全防护措施。装运油品的油罐汽车，排气管应引向汽车的前部，容器内表面应作防腐蚀处理，并配备静电接地和安全阀等装置。装运液化石油气、液态气体等的液罐汽车,容器为双层保温结构,内层多用防腐蚀材料制成，也可用表面已作防腐蚀处理或衬有耐腐蚀材料的普通钢板，外层用钢板。夹层内填充绝热材料。液化气体的温度一般都很低，制造液罐的材料和焊条要求耐低温。装运饮用品的液罐用无毒塑料、不锈钢板或铝板制造，有时为双层结构，以便保温。
