此岛面积达93平方公里，是舟山群岛中仅次于舟山岛和岱山岛的第三大岛。
六横岛上以农业较为发达。由于常年气温适中湿润，雨水丰沛，适宜种植裟、蕃薯、玉米等作物，尤其是蕃薯产量较高，闻名舟山。
六横岛有着优越的港口条件。早在16世纪中叶，一度曾为我国最早的国际贸易港口，对东南沿海地区的发展起过积极作用。
六横岛在元代以前，称为黄公山，明代起开始改名六横岛。因为全岛有从东南到西北走向的6条岭横岛屿，其形如蛇,则当地百姓称为"横"，故得名"六横"。
