经济附加值其概念源于剩余收益。由于提高部门投资报酬率的活动有时会降低公司的价值，因而实业界和理论界提出一种替代的业绩评价方法，即用剩余收益来克服投资报酬率的局限性。从税前净收益中减去资本成本得到的结果就是剩余收益。增加那些收益超过资本成本的投资或减少收益低于资本成本的投资，则剩余收益会增加。由于剩余收益法有利于使公司对部门的业绩评价与使部门或公司价值最大化的活动保持一致性，因而与投资报酬率相比，具有较大的优势。20世纪90年代，理论界用经济附加值取代了剩余收益。经济附加值概念的提出从不同角度扩展了剩余收益评价方法：一方面，经济附加值是基于资本资产定价模型而推出的，体现该行业的资本成本和部门的风险特征，能得出一个专门的、以市场为基础的单独业务单位的风险水平。另一方面，经济附加值是在对因财务报告的需要而被公认会计准则曲解的信息作出调整后计算得出的。
