美国的国防导航卫星系列。从1978年2月到1980年4月共发射6颗，组成初期试验星座,对指定区域提供4～6小时的导航服务，计划到80年代后期用18颗"导航星"构成全球定位系统实用星座。其主要任务是使海上舰船、空中飞机、地面用户及目标、近地空间飞行的导弹以及卫星和飞船实现各种天气条件下连续实时的高精度三维定位和速度测定，还可用于大地测量和高精度卫星授时等。"导航星"全球定位系统取中高度圆轨道，采用双频伪随机噪声测距导航体制。系统由18颗实用卫星和 3颗备用卫星组成，均匀分布在6个轨道面内，高度约2万公里,倾角为63°。"导航星"卫星在轨道上的重量,Ⅰ型约460公斤(图1 )，Ⅱ型为787公斤(图2 )。"导航星"卫星的主要专用设备有:高稳定度原子钟──铷钟、铯钟和氢钟,频率稳定度分别为1×10-12、1×10-13、1×10-14；导航电文存贮器用以存贮地面注入的卫星星历表、授时参数、传播延迟参数、卫星状态信息和识别信息以及粗捕获码转到精确码的时间同步信息;双频发射机用以发射L波段微波信号，频率为1575.42兆赫(L1)和1227.60兆赫(L2)，导航信号用精确码和粗捕获码进行调制，两种码共用L1和L2通道。长精确码7天重复一次,供精确定位用（精度10米左右）；短捕获码1毫秒重复一次,供快速捕获和粗略定位用（精度 100米左右）。用户接收导航信号的功率电平为-160～-166分贝瓦。实用"导航星"卫星还装有单通道卫星通信转发器和探测秘密核试验的敏感器。全球定位系统有较高的军用价值，定位精度可达十几米左右,测速精度优于0.1米/秒，授时精度优于1微秒；民用时定位精度一般为100米左右。
