古埃及比较原始的住宅大致有两种。一种以木材为墙基，上面造木构架，以芦苇束编墙，外面抹泥或者不抹。屋顶也有用芦苇束密排而成的，微呈拱形。这一种在下埃及比较多。
上埃及的以卵石为墙基，用土坏砌墙，密排圆木成屋顶，再铺上一层泥土，外形象一座有收分的长方形土台。
建于第三王朝，约公元前28世纪。
古埃及人迷信人死之后，灵魂不灭，只要保护住尸体，三千年后就会在极乐世界里复活永生。因此他们特别重视建造陵墓。有财有势的人家的陵墓很考究。早在公元前四千纪，除了庞大的地下墓室之外，还在地上用砖造了祭祀的厅堂，其形式可能源于当时贵族的长方形平台式砖石住宅的模仿。内有厅堂，墓室在地下，上下有阶梯或斜坡甬道相连，后来的金字塔是从此发展起来的。
