原始的地图大都属于意境地图。如古代埃及人用彩色描绘在纸、草、叶片上的金矿巷道；近代太平洋南部岛屿上的渔民，用椰枝、椰壳编织的岛屿分布和航线图形；北美洲爱斯基摩人在皮革上描绘的港湾地图等。现在，意境地图被用于教学和智力测验。其功能为：①为陌生者指引道路；②重现已知环境的空间位置、属性和影象；③作为辅助记忆的工具；④构成和存储地理知识；⑤反映联想或虚拟的世界。通过意境地图的测试，可了解旅游者的爱好，地理教学的效果，探索意境地图与认识论和心理学的关系。
