中世纪到19世纪期间，在12部关于阿拉伯民俗文化的经典史诗之中，艾尔-sirah艾尔-hilaliyyah叙事诗是最后一部经口头遗传保存完好的，并且今天仍能够用其完整的音乐形式来表演。曾经广泛流传于中东地区的艾尔-sirah艾尔-hilaliyyah叙事诗，现在也只有在一个国家，即埃及还能看得到。sirah在英语里被称为“哈里利史诗”，叙述了巴尼·希拉尔民族在10世纪时征服外族、开拓领土、从阿拉伯半岛穿越北非的传奇般的大移民行动以及他们悲剧性的灭亡。14世纪，诗人们就开始用打击乐器和两弦琴伴奏，吟唱史诗。传统的史诗吟颂只有在婚礼、割礼仪式和私人聚会上才进行表演，每次通常要持续50至100个小时。过去，诗人们只在家庭成员内部培训，而且史诗演出是他们唯一的经济来源。一个专业的诗人必须从5岁起接受至少10年的训练。艰苦训练过程中，诗人们不仅要锻炼记忆力、修炼唱功和乐器演奏，更重要的是学习即兴发挥的本领，因为要时常给传统的故事添加新情节以适应当代听众的口味。作为早期文学与音乐的表达形式，该史诗可以被认为是阿拉伯丰富的民间文化的宝库的一部分，其中涵盖了其历史、风俗、信仰、象征和传统。进入当代社会以来，大众娱乐形式如电视广播对史诗表演形成巨大的冲击，年轻人也越来越不能承受长期苛刻的表演训练，古老的艺术濒临消逝。而且，埃及旅游业的飞速发展使得一些年轻诗人放弃了完整的艺术宝库，反而只是挑拣其中一些简单的段落在餐馆和酒店里作民俗表演，以迎合非阿拉伯籍旅游者的简单欣赏。现在，能够表演全部史诗的诗人都已年逾70了。
