香港中文大学文学院特别主办“新纪元全球华文青年文学奖”，为全球华人青年开设一个能聚首、学习、观摩的文学盛会，希望藉此提高世界各地华族社群对文学的兴趣，为二十一世纪华文文学开路，开展中华文化的新纪元。
本文学奖的目的，是使大专青年、文学界与全球其它地区华族社会能互相接轨，共建全球性的华文文学网络，为二十一世纪宏观的世界新思潮及全球华族村创造丰富多姿的文学作品。香港中文大学文学院特别邀得国内外各大专院校单位协办此项征文活动。协办单位包括：中国翻译工作者协会、北京大学、清华大学、南京大学、复旦大学、上海华东师范大学、四川大学、广州中山大学、深圳大学、台湾大学、台湾师范大学、马来亚大学、南方学院、新纪元学院、华社研究中心、新加坡国立大学、南洋理工大学及菲律宾华文教育研究中心。
所有参赛作品先由主办单位初审及复审，再由决审团评阅，订定名次。
文学奖分散文（以八千字为限）、短篇小说（以二万字为限）及文学翻译（外文中译，原稿由大会指定，详见下文）三种文类；每种文类组别设冠、亚、季军各一名，另一等优秀奖三名及二等优秀奖七名。冠亚季军分别获奖金港币二万元、一万五千元及一万元正，另有丰富奖品以资鼓励。
