民间手头常写的俗体字。1935年初，上海文化教育界人士陈望道、胡愈之、陶行知等提出把这种俗体字用到印刷上去，使印刷体与手写体取得一致。1935年 1月，他们成立"手头字推行会"，选定第一批手头字 300多个(见图)。2月,由蔡元培、邵力子、郭沫若、郑振铎等 200人和15家杂志社联名发表《推行手头字缘起》，说："我们日常有许多便当的字，手头上大家都这么写，可是书本上并不这么印。识一个字须得认两种以上的形体，何等不便。现在我们主张把'手头字'用到印刷上去,省掉读书人记忆几种字体的麻烦,使得文字比较容易识，容易写，更能够普及到大众。这种主张从前也有人提出过，可是他们没有实在做，所以没有什么影响。现在我们决定把'手头字'铸成铜模浇出铅字来，拿来排印书本。先选出手头常用的 300个字来作为第一期推行的字汇,以后再逐渐加添,直到'手头字'跟印刷体一样为止。希望关心文化的先生们，赞同我们的主张，并且尽量采用这个字汇。"这 300个手头字的很大一部分，后来被《汉字简化方案》所采用。
