“企业家”这一概念由法国经济学家让－巴蒂斯特在1800年首次提出，即：企业家使经济资源的效率由低转高；“企业家精神”则是企业家特殊技能（包括精神和技巧）的集合。或者说，“企业家精神”指企业家组织建立和经营管理企业的综合才能的表述方式，它是一种重要而特殊的无形生产要素。例如，伟大的企业家、索尼公司创始人盛田昭夫和井深大，他们创造的最伟大的“产品”不是收录机，也不是栅条彩色显像管，而是索尼公司和它所代表的一切；沃尔特•迪斯尼最伟大的创造不是《木偶奇遇记》,也不是《白雪公主》，甚至不是迪斯尼乐园，而是沃尔特•迪斯尼公司及其使观众快乐的超凡能力；萨姆•沃尔顿最伟大的创造不是“持之以恒的天天平价”而是沃尔玛公司——一个能够以最出色的方式把零售要领变成行动的组织。
