国家体育总局武术研究院为国家武术研究机构，原称中国武术研究院。1986年3月在北京成立。1998年4月改现名。
武术研究院是国家体育总局直接领导的司局级武术研究机构。主要任务是对武术的历史、理论、技术和有关方针政策进行研究，培养和训练武术骨干队伍，为国内武术运动的发展和将武术运动推向世界服务。首任院长为徐才，副院长为蔡龙云。第二任院长为张耀庭，副院长为张山。1987年 9月，根据国家体委《关于国家体委武术工作管理体制问题的通知》，将国家体委训练竞赛四司武术处、中国武术协会、国家体委武术研究院合并为"三合一"的管理体制，统一管理国内武术工作和对外推广工作，执行国家体委对武术运动的管理职能。该院下设办公室、教学研究室、理论研究室、资料研究室、气功研究室、训练竞赛部、总务部和外事部。1990年4月18日，为适应武术事业发展的需要，增设了社会武术活动部和技术开发部。
