唐高宗李治、武则天时的官修谱牒。永徽六年(655)高宗废王皇后,改立武昭仪为后。武后逐步干预政事。当时曾经赞成废王立武的宠臣许敬宗,以太宗时所修的《贞观氏族志》没有叙明武后的本望,李义府也为其家未列入《贞观氏族志》而有所不满，二人遂建议修改《氏族志》。唐高宗诏礼部侍郎孔志约、著作郎杨仁卿、太子洗马史元道及太常丞吕才等十二人商议编录,于显庆四年(659)改《氏族志》为《姓氏录》。高宗为该书亲自写序，并规定了类例。《姓氏录》共收录二百四十五姓，二百八十七家，分为九等，当时五品以上的官员全部收入，皇后四家被列入第一等。由于兵卒以军功升五品以上官者亦入书限，引起缙绅士大夫哗然，多耻被甄叙，并号该书为"勋格"。随后，李义府上奏高宗收回全国的《氏族志》加以焚毁。《姓氏录》贯彻"各以品位为等第"的原则比《氏族志》更加彻底，所收的姓和家亦大为减少，已将当朝无官职的旧士族全部排除在外，说明它对旧族的贬抑超过了《氏族志》。但与《氏族志》相同，《姓氏录》在现实生活中所起的作用亦很有限，婚姻崇尚门第的风气以后依然盛行。
