最近“哈勃”太空望远镜拍摄到一幅“铅笔”星云照片，照片中的“铅笔”星云在正式目录中的编号为NGC2736。该星云只是船帆星座中一颗超新星爆发后残留的一小部分，船帆星座位于南半球天空。被拍摄天空区域的大小约为0.75光年，而船帆星座中这颗超新星爆发整个残余气团的大小为114光年，离开地球的距离为815光年。

天文学家认为，这次超新星爆发发生在1.1万年前，这次爆发结束了一颗巨大恒星的“生命”，在这颗超新星的区域留下了一颗脉冲星——快速旋转的中子星。尽管这次灾变已很久远，但是爆发形成的波迄今为止仍在起作用，在向周围空间喷发物质。

“铅笔”星云中的彩色条纹正是爆发形成的波与星际间气尘团相碰撞的区域，星际间气尘团在一般情况下是看不见的。但是在超新星爆发时星际间气尘团会被加热，至今仍在发射不同波长的辐射。浅蓝色区域对应着较炽热的气体，而浅红色对应比较冷的气体。与许多其他只是反射位于其中心恒星光的星云不同，“铅笔”星云由于炽热气体辐射而自己发光。它的形状也不同寻常：通常在超新星爆发之后残余的星云具有球的形状。

如果船帆星座中这颗超新星的“年龄”计算正确无误，则在超新星爆发后瞬间喷发飞溅的物质速度达到3500万千米/小时，但是现在此速度已明显变慢：在“铅笔”星云中仅为64.4万千米/小时。

在这幅照片中还可以看到一颗明亮的恒星，但是它与“铅笔”星云没有任何关系。确实，天文学家目前尚未测量这颗明亮恒星离开“铅笔”星云的距离。
