讽刺文学源远流长，早在先秦时代的《诗经》和寓言中就已有之。用小说进行讽刺的，晋唐也已有之，明代尤盛，但往往夸诞过甚而不近人情，词意浅露几同漫骂，没有取得大的艺术成就。到了清代，吴敬梓创作的《儒林外史》出现之后，说部中才算有足称讽刺之书。因为吴敬梓的讽刺”秉执公心，指摘时弊”，因此堪称讽刺文学的绝唱。到清末，随着时代的变迁，讽刺小说就衍变成为谴责小说。以李宝嘉的《官场现行记》、吴沃尧的《二十年目睹之怪现状》、刘锷的《老残游记》、曾朴的《孽海花》等谴责小说
