考古学和民族学关于文化起源的一种理论。这种理论认为文化的类似是由于传播的结果,它的基本立场是,把每种文化因素以及文化的复合体,都以传播论为中心来予以解释,同独立发生说相对立。从19世纪末到20世纪初,这种理论非常流行。英国考古学家G.E.史密斯和W.J.佩里等人,曾主张巨石文化由埃及传播到全世界等说法,目前已很少得到人们的承认。民族学上的文化圈,也属于文化传播论的一种。象上述极端的文化传播论,应该予以反对,但是在一定地区内形成的高度发展的古代文化,确曾通过文化交流,对邻近地区产生影响,因此也应该承认传播在文化发展中是起着一定的作用的。
