为帮助企业改善环境行为，消除贸易壁垒，促进贸易发展，1992年12月，在国际标准化组织（ISO）%26#8220;环境问题特别咨询组%26#8221;的建议下，ISO技术委员会决定制定一个与质量管理体系方法相类似的环境管理体系方法。为此，ISO借鉴其成功推行ISO9000的经验，总结了各国环境管理标准化的成果，尤其是参考了英国环境管理体系标准BS7750（BS7750是%26#8220;一种环境管理体系的规范，旨在保证企业的环境行为符合其所确定的环境方针与环境目标%26#8221;），于1996年底正式颁布了ISO14000环境管理系列标准。ISO14000系列标准颁布以后，立即被世界各国广泛采用，作为本国标准推广实施。
ISO14000系列标准是一个系列的环境管理标准，它包括了环境管理体系、环境审核、环境标志、生命周期评价等国际环境领域内的许多焦点问题。国际标准化组织给ISO14000系列标准预留了100个标准号，其中的ISO14001~ISO14009为环境管理体系的相关标准。
