由功能上相互依赖、互为补充的各种文化元素、文化集丛结成的，与其他区域的文化相区别的相对独立的文化系统。在某种意义上，它和文化模式相似。学者们从不同的角度观察和使用文化体系这一概念，并从不同的角度陈述它的特征与属性。概括起来大致有 3种观点：①从功能整合的角度看待文化体系。认为一种文化内部各元素和集丛之间，由于功能上的依存和互补而构成一个协调一致的有机整体，即从文化的整体一致性来界定文化体系概念。这种定义和文化模式无大差别。②从文化区划界的角度看待文化体系。认为一种文化有保持自己界限的特征和属性,由于有了这种属性,就与周围环境以及与另一种文化区分开而自成体系。如欧美文化体系、亚洲文化体系。③从"自主"角度界定文化体系。认为每一种文化体系都能自给自足，既不从属于另一个体系，也不需要与别的体系沟通交换，能够独立存在和发展。不具备这个特征，便不能成为一个体系。
以上各种观点不是互相矛盾而是互为补充的。无论从何种角度分析文化体系，都不能脱离一定的时空。具体的文化体系总是一定地域和一定时代的文化，如古代希腊、罗马文化。
